Information we collect
Project enquiries
When you contact us, we receive your name, email address, optional company name, the subject you select and the information you include in your message.
Newsletter subscriptions
We receive the email address you submit and information associated with sending and confirming the subscription. An address is not added to our newsletter contacts until the confirmation step is completed. The confirmation link expires after 24 hours.
Technical and security information
Our hosting and security services may process standard request information such as IP address, browser and device information, timestamps, requested pages and security signals. We pass a Turnstile verification token and, where available, the request IP address to Cloudflare to assess whether form submissions are legitimate.
Preferences and local resources
The site remembers your light or dark theme choice for the current browser session. It does not identify you to us. If you turn off reading statistics below, we save that choice in this browser until you change it or clear the site's stored data. The site's fonts and icons are served locally, so loading them does not send a separate request to a font or icon provider.
Reading statistics and your choice
We count article openings, visits with at least 30 seconds of active reading, and visits that reach at least 90% of an article after 30 seconds of active reading. We use these totals to understand which articles help readers and improve our writing.
These statistics contain only the day, article, type of reading activity, country and a count. Cloudflare provides the country from the request; we do not save a more precise location. Our reading statistics do not store IP addresses, visitor identifiers, cookies or referring pages, and cannot show us an individual reader's history. Hosting and security services may separately process the technical information described above.
Cloudflare stores the totals for us. We remove daily totals more than 90 days old when the next reading activity is recorded; they may remain longer if no new activity arrives.
You can object to this measurement by turning it off below. The choice applies to this browser and does not affect your access to articles. We also turn reading statistics off when your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, or when we cannot read your saved preference. No reading statistics are sent when JavaScript is disabled.

Why we use it
- To respond to enquiries and discuss possible work. We rely on steps requested before a contract, or our legitimate interests in managing genuine business enquiries, depending on the context.
- To send the newsletter. We rely on your consent. Selecting the newsletter consent box and completing the separate confirmation step records a clear request for these emails.
- To operate and protect the website. We rely on our legitimate interests in providing a reliable service, preventing abuse and securing our systems.
- To meet legal obligations and handle disputes. We use information where this is necessary to comply with law or establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
Providing information through the site is optional. Without the contact details and message marked as required, we cannot respond to an enquiry. Without an email address, the consent selection and the separate confirmation, we will not add an address to the newsletter.
Who receives it
We use suppliers that process information on our behalf where needed to provide the site and communications:
- Cloudflare for website hosting, request handling, reading statistics and Turnstile bot protection. Read Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- Resend to deliver contact and confirmation emails and to hold confirmed newsletter contacts. Read Resend's privacy policy.
We may also disclose information to professional advisers, courts, regulators or public authorities where reasonably necessary or required by law. We do not sell personal information.
International processing
Some suppliers operate internationally, so personal information may be processed outside the UK. Where our use of a service involves a restricted transfer, the transfer must be covered by an applicable UK adequacy regulation, approved contractual safeguard or another lawful mechanism. Contact us if you would like information about the safeguard relevant to your data.
How long we keep it
We keep enquiry information only while it is needed to respond, decide whether to work together, maintain necessary business records, comply with legal obligations or resolve a dispute. We review it and delete or anonymise it when those purposes no longer apply.
Confirmed newsletter contact information is kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. We may retain the minimum suppression information needed to make sure we respect an opt-out. Unconfirmed addresses are not added to the newsletter list, although the confirmation email and related delivery records may remain in Resend for the period applied to that service.
Technical and security records are kept according to operational need and the retention settings of the services involved.
Your choices and rights
Depending on the circumstances, UK data protection law may give you rights to access, correct, erase or restrict your information, receive a portable copy, and object to certain uses. You can withdraw newsletter consent at any time by using the unsubscribe option in an email or contacting us. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal.
Your right to object: you can object at any time to our use of your information for direct marketing. We will stop using it for that purpose.
To exercise a right, contact TreeNodes using the form or email option. We may need information to verify your identity before acting on a request.
You can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office. We would appreciate the opportunity to address your concern first, but you do not have to contact us before approaching the ICO.
Automated security checks
Cloudflare Turnstile makes an automated security assessment when a protected form is used. We use the result to accept or reject that submission. We do not use solely automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.
Changes to this notice
We may update this notice when our services, suppliers or legal obligations change. The date at the top shows the latest revision.
